What is 1st Grade Learning? 

Religion

We will read about how Jesus taught Nicodemus that through faith people receive eternal life and how he showed a Samaritan woman that he is the Savior.  We will practice showing love for people who like different things and have different opinions than we do.

Memory:  The Third Article of the Apostles' Creed (Sanctification)
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen

Reading

We will continue our biography unit.  This week, the students will read an informational text called Before the Railroad.  

Phonics: Word endings (er, est, s, es, ed, ing)

Reading Fluency Skill: Students will decode longer words by breaking them into syllables.  

Spelling: -  4.3 faster, fastest, short, shorter, shortest, slow, slower, slowest, *away, *pretty

Writing

This week the students will write a Who Am I? riddle about a rainforest animal.  

Grammar:  Lesson 16- Adjectives

Math

Unit 9:  Students will use mental math to find 10 more of a given number, use place value to add 2-digit numbers and a multiple of 10 and use place value to add a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number.       

Science

Unit 5   Lesson 1:  Where do Plants and Animals Live? The Rainforest

Social Studies

Unit 4:  Globes and Maps (The students will practice the cardinal directions and learn the names of the continents and oceans)

February Chapel Offerings -  February chapel offerings will be given to LERT (Lutheran Emergency Response Team).  

Eaton's Pizza Reading Incentive Program-  An Eaton's pizza calendar was sent home. (The same reading stars can be used for the Eaton's pizza incentive.  When you mark a star on the reading sheet, you can mark a star on the Eaton's calendar).  

Reading Road Race Rally -   The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally.  We will participate in this with Mrs. Boyce's class.  Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week.  A star should be colored in for each reading session.

Snack and waterbottles-    Please send a healthy snack with your child each day.  I will have extra snacks available in case it is forgotten on a busy morning.  Waterbottles can be used throughout the day and can be refilled at the drinking fountain.
