Week of January 20th

What is 1st Grade Learning?

Religion

Our Old Testament stories this week are about how Moses receives the 10 Commandments and how Aaron helps the Israelites build a golden calf.  We will discuss how we have sinned by disobeying God's commandments, but Jesus has died on the cross to take away our sins and offers us forgiveness.

Memory:  Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.

Reading

The students will read a persuasive story about art and music.  They will read and describe reasons why art and music are important.

Phonics: nk and ng endings

Reading Fluency Skill: Students will decode longer words by breaking them into syllables.

Spelling: -  Unit 3.5 bring, pink, ring, rink, sing, song, thing, think, *around, *grow

Writing

This week the students will continue to work on their fables.  They will pick a problem for the middle (problem with self, others, or the world), describe their characters in the beginning and have the characters learn a lesson (moral) at the end.

Grammar:  Lesson 28 - Irregular Past Tense Verbs (go/went, run/ran, eat/ate)

Math

Unit 7:  Students will represent an add to situation with an equation when two addends are known and unknown.  Students will also add three addends and solve various addition equations.

NEW and IMPORTANT-

January Chapel Offerings -For the month of January, our school chapel offerings are supporting Family Sharing. In addition to the offering money collected each Wednesday, we are also looking for a few key items to support Family Sharing this season. They are looking for canned chicken, canned pineapple, canned peaches, oatmeal variety   packs, and granola bar packs. Donations will be collected in the classroom throughout January.

Eaton's Pizza Reading Incentive Program-  An Eaton's pizza calendar was sent home. (The same reading stars can be used for the Eaton's pizza incentive.  When you mark a star on the reading sheet, you can mark a star on the Eaton's calendar).

Reading Road Race Rally -   The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally.  We will participate in this with Mrs. Boyce's class.  Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week.  A star should be colored in for each reading session.
