Week of May 19th

What is 1st Grade Learning?

Religion

We will read about how Jesus wants us to be good neighbors who love and help others like the Good Samaritan.  We will also learn how just as God has forgiven our sins, he expects us to forgive others instead of being like the Unforgiving Servant found in Matthew 18.

Memory: 5th Commandment You shall not murder.
7th Commandment You shall not steal.

Reading

We will work on comprehension skills including making predictions and retelling a story with a beginning, middle and end.

Reading Fluency Skill:   Reading at an appropriate rate (not too fast or slow) and volume (not too loud or soft)

Phonics: Vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, igh, ew, ue, oo, ou, ow, oi, oy, aw, al)

Spelling: NO SPELLING 😉

Writing

This week we will write camping capers and Father's Day poems.

Grammar:  Sentence review of capital letters, complete sentences with nouns, verbs and adjectives and ending marks.

Math

Unit 13:  Students will partition identical shapes into halves and fourths to understand that more equal shares create smaller shares.  We will also take our sumative end of the year test.

Science

Heat -  We will learn about heat energy as we test different containers and learn about fireflies.

Social Studies

Unit 5:  Our Nation-  The students will relate the president's role to God's purpose for government, list qualities of a good leader and take the unit test.
